Vintage Wood and Wrought Iron Courting Candle. What is a "courting candle" ? In the late 1800s when a suitor came calling, the father took a quick look and decided how long he could stay. If he was handsome, upstanding or wealthy he would raise the candle. If he was homely, dishonest or poor, he would lower the candle. When the flame burned down to the metal holder, the date was over and the suitor had to leave.
It is 9" tall and in excellent used condition. Please note: the candle is for illustrative purposes only and is NOT included.
